Thomas' Arrest Records

At first glance the photos of his arrest record
seem to be for someone named John Chamberlain.
Here’s the story. I was browsing through the
Territorial Case files on footnote.com and
couldn’t find anything on Thomas which seemed
odd. I knew the time of his arrest so checked the
files there and found a record for John
Chamberlain. When I got to Page 8, I discovered
that though the warrant was issued for a John
Chamberlain, not Thomas a minute entry was made
correcting the name to Thomas.
This actually adds a whole new slant to the
arrest story. Someone correct me if I’m wrong,
but Thomas did not actually have to go to jail
for this arrest due to the fact that he was not
the person named on the warrant, and as a matter
of fact, the arrest made under that warrant was
illegal.
It appears that rather than just postpone the
inevitable, he chose to accept the warrant as
served and go to prison.
A couple of months ago, I also obtained a copy of
an Executive Order dated April 18, 1897
appointing him as a the representative for Kane
County on the semi-centennial committee (this is
also in Thomas Photo Gallery). The governor had
complete trust in him to spend money for the
state and a year and a half later, Thomas was in
Prison.
